Begovácz Rózsa – Burján István – Vándor Andrea: Folk Art in Baranya County (Pécs, 2008)

Costumes

number of new elements were drawn into Hungarian costumes through the permanent contact with Slavic people, which is manifested in our vocabulary as well: ruha (cloth), gúnya (slops), kabát (coat), csuha (monk's cowl), nadrág (trousers), szoknya (skirt), harisnya (stockings), kapca (foot cloth), posztó (broadcloth). Some international terms in connection with clothing show a Western impact in the Middle Ages ( suba - long leather cloak, köntös- mantle, atlasz- atlas, tafota - taffeta, etc.). These give us evidence that in Hungarian clothing new and old elements were mixing during the Middle Ages. It was in this period that some pieces of the costume were created that contemporaries thought were of Oriental origin. Suba was worn by gentlemen as well as peasants, difference was shown only in the processing, the amount and the ornamenting of the leather. Similarly, other leather garments like ködmöns can be traced back to the Middle Ages, just like high felt caps known from archaeological findings.
