Schleininger Tamás: A solti járásban letelepedett cigány családok összeírásai Mária Terézia korában

Tamás Schleininger Register of the gipsy families in the district of Solt in the age of Maria Theresa (Source material report)- Summary -Concerning the situation of the gipsies in Hungary, both Maria Theresa and Joseph II issued several orders and decrees in the 1700s. In this question, “enlightened absolutism” meant - according to a west-European pattern - settling gipsies instead of pursuing them, which included their involvement in obligations like taxation. The final purpose was their melting into the natives, which would have meant their involvement within the extent of laws. To realize this royal, and, at the same time, social demand, it was necessary to take into account the number and statistic data of the layer of people whom the various rules and restrictions referred to. The census of 1760 to be found in the Archives of Pest County is sketchy: only the family supporters were recorded and their “estate” was enumerated (for the purpose of taxation!). The registers of 1768 are already about whole families: besides the name of places, the name of the owners of the property is recorded; the age and the religion of the family members (those of the children from the age of seven) as well as the father and the elder sons’ job. Family supporters were recorded in 28 settlements in the District of Solt in 1760. The most names (11) occurred in Pataj. The census of 1768 contains 29 place-names and 566 persons. As in the case of the registers of the District of Pilis we can draw the conclusions that young generations had a dominant role: the population was lively and vigorous. Those who had settled led a consolidated way of life: each head of the household had a trade, the family members were religious (most of them being Roman Catholic). What had to be revealed was revealed ... Taxation could be initiated. 80
