Folk musis of the village Bátya (Extact) Our volume represents the cross-section of the folk music of the village Bátya near the city Kalocsa. Bátya’s population is bilingual: Hungarian-Rats (Soutem Slav), wich results from the mixing of the two ethnic groups. This duality can be observed in all its culture as well as in its folk music. Our collection contains Hungarian folk songs of old and new styles also with Rats lyrics while Soutern Slav melodies also with Hungarian lyrics. It is interesting to note that the Hungarian Transdanubian pentaton frequently occurs in songs with their lyrics in both languages. The so called news poems and satirical songs played a singificant role in the everyday life of the village. The Rats „becarac” songs with their numerous stanzas form a peculiar group in the collection of songs. A Croatian historical song on King Matthias and Petar Dunski among epic melodies and a series of well -known Hungarian popular ballads were found. The pairing songs and laments have lyrics in both languages, while the lament parody is in Hungarian. In recent years there were two tambura bands in the village playing both Hungarian and Rats melodies. The songs were collected by the resident Zoltán Fehér between 1952 and 1990.
