Charter of the Royal free Borough of Esztergom, 1708. (Komárom- Esztergom County Archives) fragmented but still they are very necessary sources of writing local history. The files of records and documents during the work of councils, documents of chief justice and accounts, public trustee, urban economist, tax controller and deputy commissioner of the police can be found among the documents of market towns from feudalism. The urban material from after 1848 is much more differentiated. The main part of it involves the records and files of the body of representatives and the documents of mayor's office. Less documents of the different special offices survived. We can hardly find material from feudalism among the documents of municipalities (judicial accounts, records in connection with taxation, proclamation book etc.) Most records of the municipal board of representatives from the second half of the 19 th century and from afterwards got into archives without much missing. But the documents of municipal administration and tax records are more fragmented. Professional administration was carried out by independent state
