THE ARCHIVES OF SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS - Archives of History of Politics and Trade Union by Katalin Zalai

Visitors' book of the XXXV Congress of Social Democratic Party, January-February 1947 there were Lajos Hatvány, Oszkár Jászi, József Madzsar, Roland Romain and Pál Szende. The fond includes documents about Károlyi's life as an emigre as well as family, personal documents and manuscripts. One of the centres of Hungarian political emigration after the period of the Hungarian Soviet Republic was France. We can get copious information on this topic from Béla Menczer's, Lajos Papp's Pál Aranyossy's and his wife as well as the mentioned Mihály Károlyi's fonds. We also hold the bequests of numerous Hungarian emigrants, who used to live in other centres of immigration for varying durations of time - mainly the Communist countries - as in the Soviet Union. Many were either executed or spent the rest of their lives in these countries. Prominent individuals who come to mind are Frigyes Karikás, Lajos Magyar and János Mathejka. However, some were more fortunate and were able to return to Hungary: Ernő Czóbel, Béla Lándor, Zoltán Fodor, Gizella Berzeviczy, Sándor Szerényt, Jenő Varga. The number of document bequests from influential figures in the field of scientific research (because of their political roles after 1945) is increasing. This area is one of the most important possibilities for our archives collection research work because as private archives we are not able to collect public documents as it is prohibited by archival law. We are exceedingly conscientious in taking care of these documents and have rigorous safety procedures in place to ensure that they are not misplaced or lost. Lastly, we usually obtain these documents as deposits, sometimes as purchases and more often as donations. We have procured the documents of several former party and state leaders like László Orbán, István Friss, Károly Kiss, Ferenc Münnich, József Révai, Dezső Nemes, Károly Grósz, János Berecz and István Katona in this way
