Zoltán Garadnai THE POLICY OF GENERAL CHARLES DE GAULLE OF OPENING TO THE EAST BETWEEN 1944 AND 1946 Between 1944 and 1946, France under General Charles De Gaulle sought to reestablish relations with the countries of Eastern and Central Europe and the Balkans. This opening-up began with De Gaulle’s 1944 trip to Moscow and the signing of the Franco-Soviet Friendship Treaty and ended with his resignation in 1946. France wanted to rebuild relations with the countries of Eastern Europe and the Balkans, but by 1945 it had become clear that the new ruler of the region would be the Soviet Union, after the Nazi Germany. In this study, we will use French sources and literature to illustrate the attempts of de Gaulle’s diplomacy to stabilise position of France and to make it an equal partner in Europe. To do so, Paris needed the cooperation of the Soviet Union and the Central and Eastern European states. No essay on this subject has yet been published in Hungarian, so our study, based on basic research, will hopefully provide a new contribution to researchers interested in the period and the subject. 300
