Munkavégzés és szabadidő-kultúra a 19-20. században - Balogh János Mátyás: A kávéházba járó budapesti kisember (1890-1891)
JÁNOS M ÁTYÁS B ALOGH COFFEE-SHOP CULTURE AND ORDINARY PEOPLE IN BUDAPEST (1890–1891) In my study, I concluded from analyzing two years’ events recorded in a diary of an ordinary man, János József Lowetinszky that visiting coffee shops in 1890–1891 in Budapest was not only typical leisure activity of the bourgeoisie, but of the ordinary people (workers, servants, aides, officials, industrialist). Based on this diary, we can observe and describe some of the typical guests of a coffee shop: for them (both women and men), the attractiveness of the coffee shop was its function as an important place of their social life, the place for their afternoon gatherings. I suppose, however, the world of coffee shops (at this time) was not “democratic” at all – the ordinary people in Budapest went to their own places.
