Közlemények - Poór János: Berzeviczy Gergely Panorama von Ungarnja
BERZEVICZY GERGELY PANORAMA VON UNGARN]A GERGELY BERZEVICZY'S PANORAMA VON UNGARN: Although Gergely Berzeviczy (1763-1822) left his office at Buda in 1795 and returned to his estate in the Szepes region, due to his German- and Latin-language books and articles written on industry, comerce, peasantry, religion and politics, he gained considerable fame within and beyond the borders of the country. Among his friends, admirers, correspondents, opponents, and harsh critics, illustrious members of the contemporary intellectual life can be discovered. However, several important works of this diligently writing author remained in manuscript, just like the Panorama von Ungarn — preserved at the National Archives of Hungary —, which was intended to give a synthesis of the Hungarian history, and contains an introduction about the history of the world, as well. Still, from historical point of view, this work is of minor importance; it is not an academic historical treatise. Its significance lies in the person of the author, who has provoked a series of academic and political debates, and in the socio-political views expressed (also) on the pages of the Panorama. Berzeviczy claimed that because of the system of the nobility's privileges, Hungary had drifted out of the mainstream of world history, and had no place in modern Europe. In the Panorama, he argued for property, the destruction of the even historically unjustifiable privileges, the joint sharing of tax burdens, the expansion of political rights, and the elevation of the lower social classes. This extensive manuscript (like all works of Berzeviczy) proves the strong presence of the early liberal ideas in Hungary at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Jóllehet Berzeviczy Gergely (1763-1822) 1795-ben otthagyta budai, helytartótanácsi hivatalát, és visszavonult szepességi birtokára, főleg latin és német nyelvű munkái révén komoly ismertségre tett szert az ország határain belül és kívül. Barátai, tisztelői, levelezőpartnerei, vitapartnerei és éles bírálói között tudhatta a magyar szellemi élet legjelesebb képviselőit, köztük Kovachich Márton Györgyöt, Schwartner Mártont, Rumy Károly Györgyöt, Kazinczy Ferencet, Dessew- ffy Józsefet. A vidéki élet egyébként sem szigetelte el. Monográfusa, Gaal Jenő tekintélyes arisztokraták, nemesek és jeles külföldiek névsorát is megadja, amikor házának vendégeit sorolja fel, ott volt köztük például József nádor és János főherceg is.1 A főhercegek kapcsán említendő, hogy 1806-ban terjedelmes hadügyi reformtervezetet küldött Károly főhercegnek, amelyre munkáját nagyra értékelő válaszlevelet kapott.2 A 18-19. század fordulójának ama kevés gondolkodója közé tartozik, akinek a neve — „bizonyítékként" — rendre előkerül azokban a munkákban, amelyek a reformkor eszmei előzményeit a századfordulón is jelenlévőknek vélik.3 Művei a nemesi adómentesség felszámolásáról, jobPOÓR JÁNOS 1 Gaal, 1902.1. köt. 96-98. 2 Károly főherceg levelét közölte: uo. 221-222. 3 A felvilágosodás és a reformkor közötti korszak értelmezéseihez (Berzeviczy munkásságára is kitérve) 1.: Miskolczy, 2007.
