As stated in a note, I did call around me some of the principal arab navigators who had arrived with the monsoon of novembre in our port, and I found that almost all the peaces were recognised by them, and the justess of the nautical directions confirmed: although they did not know the author or his work by name. The whole work of Sidi AH seems of too interesting a nature, that it would merit publication, and I should think the Oriental Translation Fund would be most happy to add it to their list, could you be persuaded to undertake the labour of translation. For separate, extract and publication the voyager in the ninth chapter. May probably afford the most instruction, and should you have had leisure to translate this or any other part, I shall be but too proud to admit it in my humble work. I take his oppurtunity of requesting your acceptance of a copy of the three first volumes of this work, which I will forward through the Austrian Ambassador at London, to whem I am now addressing a box Tibetan Dictionaries and Grammars just issueed from the Calcutta Press for distribution to the Universities and Libraries of His Imperial Majesty's dominions. This Dictionary and Grammar is the work as you may probably know, of the Hungarian TraveUer Mr. Alex.[ander] Csorna Körösi, who prepared it in the inhospitables snows of Tibet, and it is well calculated by its accuracy and fulness to do Credit to him and to the Governement at whose expence it has been printed. Mr. Csoma is now engaged on the study of Sanscrit and its analogy of structure to the Hungarian, and we may soon expect very curious results from his studies. Hivatali állásánál fogva közreműködött Csoma műveinek kiadásában. 71 Hammer-Purgstall, Joseph (Graz, 1774. jún. 9. — Bécs, 1856. okt. 23.), osztrák orientalista, turkológus. 1799 — 1809 között a törökországi osztrák képviseleteken töltött be különböző posztokat, 1811-től udvari tolmács, 1815-ben az áUamkancellária kötelékébe került. Metternich-el való eHentétek miatt 1839-ben elveszítette udvari tolmács posztját. Az Osztrák Tudományos Akadémia első elnökévé választották 1847-ben. 72 Sidi Ali, c Ali Ып Húsain (Ï —1562), török tengernagy. 1553-ban Basrából Egyiptomba tartó flottáját a portugálok megverték, a hajóhad maradékát a viharok India partjaira sodorták. Itt írta 1554-ben a korabeli török tengerészeti ismereteket összegző híres munkáját az ,,Oceán"-t.
