238 1920 A) Reply to paragraph I. of your letter of the 28th of February No. 1696 1 and the report dated the 15th of February No. 215/5 of the 2nd Czecho-Slovak Infantry Division : It is a fact that on the 25th of February in the morning hours a Hungarian patrol appeared at Cered where to their surprise they found a Czecho-Slovak patrol, the 5 members of which they disarmed. Meanwhile a Czecho-Slovak soldier jumped out of a window and escaped, while another injured his leg in jumping and was left behind at the Cered school to be attended to. The Hungarian patrol entered Cered because their commander had been informed that a Czecho-Slovak patrol constantly crossed the demarcation line, ill-treating the population. The Hungarian commander was convinced of the borough of Cered being situated on this side of the demarcation line, a question which is so far not yet defined, and he never suspected the presence of Czecho-Slovak soldiers there. The disarmament of the Czecho-Slovak was resorted to by the Hungarian patrol as a precautionary measure. As regard the ransacking of the property of a landowner, paragraph B. supplies full details: B) Re protocol attached to the letter of the 2nd Infantry Division of Czecho-Slovakia, date of the letter 15th of February No 215/5 : The protocol is said to be drawn up on the testimony of the landowner F. and I beg to enclose the translations of a report based on the details given by landowner R. F. and by his steward E.B. 2 According to this report, F. was absent from his property on the day in question. E. B., his steward on the other hand states that the farm has nothing whatever to claim from the Hungarian Army. M.M., M.R. (and not K.) as well as J. F. state in the corresponding report that the thefts in question were committed by civilians and not by soldiers. Some of the offenders have been arrested, the persecution of the others being in course. Concerning the contents of the letter dated the 15th of February No 2x5/5 of the 2nd Infantry Division of CzechoSupra, Doc. No. 152. 3 Not printed.
