Háda Béla The article presents the characteristics of the Burmese political situation, and the transformation of power relations within the Northern Indian Ocean in the last two decades. It also analyses the country's present relations with India and China. The conclusion is that the Burmese government is in a difficult situation. By accepting Chinese (or Indian) assistance, the military elite could secure its position against Western sanctions and the domestic opposition, but would endanger the country's sovereignty. The Burmese political transformation, however, is an opportunity for India and the U.S. to counter Chinese influence in the Southeast Asian state. 188 Külügyi Szemle
