Résumé The essay examines if Nicolas Sarkozy as President of the French Republic (2007-) suc­ceeded in breaking with Frangafrique. Obviously the „defran^africanization" of Africa has strategic, economic and human re­source limits. In the beginning, the US celebrated the courageous, new African policy plan of the French that could have created opportunity for them to expand American influence in Africa without clashing with French interests. In addition, the French would prefer the US presence in the area on one hand as an ally in the fight against the Saharan terrorism and on the other hand as an alternative to China's regional expansion. Flowever, the Obama administration already had doubts in 2009 about the success of Sarkozy's ambitious plan. The US diplomacy stated that the French President „underesti­mated the challenge and overestimated his power and capabilities". Fran^afrique is indeed full of paradoxes... . nyár 2011 175
