Résumé Congolese Kaleidoscope 1998-2008: Power Shifts in the DRC's “Arena" After the end of the first "continental war" of Africa (1998-2002), the Democratic Republic of the Congo was by far not in a situation which could be characterized by peace and restoration of order - on the contrary: her eastern part remained a quagmire of violence. However the official military forces of the foreign powers have left the country's territory. One would also point out the fact that the 2002 'inter-Congolese dialogue' in Sun City has finally led to accepting the constitution for the transition period by the main Congolese factions in April 2003, and that the president Joseph Kabila was reinforced by the first democratic elections in 2006. But it was rather the aftermath of the unconventional war which still ignited new fires of conflict amongst irregular militias (proxy forces for the neighbor countries, local warlords' armies, rebel groups of the neighbor countries finding sanctuary in the DRC, local self-defense forces - the maimai), the United Nations peacekeeping forces (the MONUC) and the new Congolese army (FARDC). The EU is also one of the power brokers with military presence on the spot. The essay discusses - without the intention of giving an exhaustive list - some of the most important actors of the last years' peace process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also raises questions and outlines some possible scenarios about the stability of the DRC in connection with the neighboring countries. 2008. tél 139
