Résumé Kosovo's Independence - The Views of Macedonia and the Macedonian Albanians The Macedonian official view - as it was stated by the Foreign Minister - is that Kosovo's independence is a question of European magnitude. At the same time Macedonia, as Serbia's and Albania's neighbor, supports the settlement of the question as soon as possible as a country which has a vested interest in solving the problem. However, it warns of the dangers of unilateral actions as well. It prefers a solution based on the Ahtisaari Plan, which enjoyes a Euro-atlantic support, and which should be based on the recognition of the interests of the parties involved. The essay, besides discussing this official position in details, deals with the history of the Macedonian-Kosovar relations, discusses the relevant ideas of the Macedonian scholarly and intellectual circles, as well as those of the civilian organizations, then it turns its attention to the anxieties and expectations of the people at large in this matter. Among other things, it recalls those special interests which Skopje would like to realize - even with regard to an independent Kosovo too. As Kosovo is of special importance for the Macedonian Albanians, the essay also pays attention to the relations between the two Albanian etnic groups. It discusses the Macedonian Albanians' commitment to Kosovo and seeks to answer the question, if there will be any impact of independence on the relationship between the Macedonian Slav and Albanian ethnic groups and on the position of the country; and if the answer is 'yes', what it will be like. 26 Külügyi Szemle
