András Balogh The European Integration and the Mediterranean Unity This paper examines the theory of the Mediterranean unity, in the context of the enlargement of institutional frameworks of the European integration. The author reviews the historical, economic and political arguments concerning the organic contacts, interrelationship and interdependence among the different regions of the Mediterreneum and comes to the conclusion that since the disintegration of the Roman Empire the unity of the Mediterranean basin has disappeared and at the end of the 20th century the attempts to restore its substantial economic, political, or cultural integration is more a romantic than realistic aspiration.
