Resume the enlergement of the European Union; what means are at the disposal of American foreign policy in this respect; and how are the enlargements of NATO and the European Union related to each other. The analysis will examine these questions after outlining the broader context of Euro-American relations. The paper comes to the conclusion that American foreign policy has three particular areas where it can promote Hungary's aspirations to join the European Union. These are: trade liberalization; the enlargement of NATO; and enhanced dialogue with the European Union. The policies of the United States obviously cannot guarantee Hungarian membership in the European Union; they can, nevertheless, make a serious contribution to Hungarian aspirations. 154 Külpolitika
