Late glacial and Holocene diatom based lake level reconstruction in a glacial lake in Retezat Mountains (Romania) Soróczki-P., É., Buczkó, K., Braun, M., Magyari, E. Abstract: A Late Quaternary palaeoecological multi-proxy study (PROLONG) is in progress from 2007 in the Retezat Mountains (Southern Carpathian, Romania). We have analysed the 328cm-long sediment sequence (Gales-3, 45°23'6"N, 22°54'33"E) from Lake Gales, one of the glacial lakes in Retezat Mts. using siliceous algae microfossils (diatoms and Chrysophyceae cysts) to study ecosystem response to climate change during the late-glacial and Holocene. This paper discusses the lake level fluctuations in relation to organic content, Chrysophyceae cysts to diatoms frustules rate and the composition of diatom assemblages. At the end of Würm period, during the B0Iling/Allered warming period the increase of the non-aerophytic taxa was observed close to the Younger Dryas (ca. 12,840 cal BP yr) that meaning cooling effect establishes dry and cool conditions characterizing dominance of the aerophytic taxa. We inferred the highest lake level during the lake history was at_(~9500-9000 cal BP yr) from the peak of the planktonic diatom, Fragilaria crotonensis. After the Holocene Climate Optimum ca. 3700 cal BP yr abrupt floristic and assemblages changes were be observed when alkalkaliphilous fragilarioid taxa are replaced by acidophilous diatoms. Some of the rheophil taxa can be observed in the whole sediment sequence marking the continual presence of the small inflow. Keywords: diatoms, late glacial, Holocene, palaeoecological studies, Retezat, lake level. Kiossy Irén alkotása
