Seenaya et Subba Raju Attila Kovács, László Hiripi, Mátyás Présing & Lajos Vörös Balaton Limnological Research Institute of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences, Tihany Abstract: The progressive eutrophication of Laké Balaton was perceived in the early sevcnties. The first indications was the quantity of diatoms and dinoflagellates increased moderately. From 1975 and onwards, the summer mass development of filamentous blue-greens became a regular phenomenon in the western part - and sometimes in the eastern part- of the lake. The eutrophication of Laké Balaton is associated with increasing dominance of blue-greens, with parallel to many temperate and tropical lakes. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is one of the most common species of cyanobacteria which can cause nuisance blooms ín tropícal and subtropical waters. During the latest cyanobacterial bloom (1994), water and sediment samples collected in Lake Balaton have been used as basis for establishing enrichment cultures. These cultures were used for extensive isolations to obtain clonal cultures of strains for experimentál studies. The first C. raciborskii strain isolated from Lake Balaton (ACT-9502) was the subject of a series of ecophysiologica! experiments performed in batch and continuous cultures. The temperature dependence of growth parameters, pigment composition and cell morphology were determined in an incubation system at seven different light intensities, between 10 and 390 ^Einstein m" 2 sec" 1. Lighting was unidirectional, triplicates were placed in a box with five black walls, one side being open toward the light. Result indicates that C. raciborskii is a termophilic species. We observed linear relationship between temperature and growth rate in temperature rangé of 15 and 36 °C. The / k parameters of the growth-irradiance curves varied between 6.6 and 68 ^Einstein m 2 sec '. Carotenoid /chlorophyll-a ratio increased significantly (fivefold-eightfold) with increasing light intensity. Natural populations of C. raciborskii usually show yellow-green color due to their high oscillaxanthin content. Keywords: Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, light intensity, temperature, cross gradient
