Vine-growing went through essential changes in the 17i century. Besides white grapes making white wines whic had been prevailing before, other types of grapes makir red wine gradually gained ground. The main source of livir

in Eger was vine-growing and wine making in the 17t and 18th centuries.

During that period a considerable quantity of wine we exported to Poland, to the Baltic states and to Vienna. 1 achieve better quality, they also determined the time c the grape harvest.

In the 1850s the production of Eger Bikavér took off. Th dynamic development was broken by the phylloxera ep: demic, which resulted in the near complete extinction c vineyards before 1886. They needed twenty years to re establish vine-growing again.
