Eger, the city of wines Eger, the city of wines The Eger wine region can be found on the south-western slopes of the Bükk Mountains, between the Bükk and the Mátra Mountains. Several hundred years ago, a wine-growing land, having achieved world fame by now, was formed at the foothills of the mountain range where the Great Plains and the mountains meet. Vine-growing started at the beginning of the 11 century. When the bishopric was established, monastic orders moved into the town, and they brought their grape and wine culture with them from their original homes. In the Christian liturgy wine played an important role. 34
