Eger, the city of wines The most significant part of the northern vine-growing areas of the Eger wine region lies in a triangle bordered by Eger, Felsőtárkány and Noszvaj. The soil is quite varied, basically, it can be found on rhyolite-tuff detritus. The best wine-growing villages lie on rhyolite-tuff. 17 settlements belong to the wine region, with an area of more than 14,500 acres. The outstanding professional achievements of three Eger wine-makers have been acknowledged by the Hungarian Wine Academy. In 1995 Vilmos Thummerer, in 1998 Tibor Gál, in 2005 Béla Vincze were awarded “Winemaker of the Year”. The Eger wine region is the optimal area for quality wine-growing. The fame of its wines is due to the luckily combined effects of several factors.
