Bökény, enabling thus the transfer of 12 cu. m/sec harmful excess surface water even conveyed by the main canal to the Körös River by gravity even in case of the highest water stage of the river. The Jászság Main Canal had been constructed with a discharge capacity of 48 cu. m/sec over a length of 21,3 km. It is diverted upstream of the barrage on the right-hand bank of the Tisza River and provides irrigation water, partly by gravity, to 72 000 hectares of land. The Jászság Main Canal No. 1 (J—1 branch) to be constructed in the next development stage, will reach the Zagyva River at Újszász. The Jászság Main Canal No. 2 (J—2 branch) reaches also the Zagyva River in the vicinity of Alattyán. The J—3 branch supplies irrigation water to the region lying north of Jászapáti. Fields situated at higher elevation in of the Jászság irrigation system can be supplied only by pumped lifting. The main canals are led mainly in cohesive soils, therefore they have earth bed. The slope of their water level is 2 cm per km. At the intersections of canals with drainage canals and railroads, inverted siphons were built to ensure crossing. The road crossing are solved by bridges. The main canals are non-navigable. The collection of seepage waters and their transfer to the drainage system is performed by parallel ditches, taking also part in carrying of the drainage waters.
