This uas the first face-to-face dial- ogue between the Party and the Hungárián Democratic Fórum, although it was nőt an official discussion. Zoltán Bíró stressed that the recent haste could have been avoided if the democratisation of the political institute system had begun a decade earlier. Many people touched on the two-faced quality of the Party. Csaba Gy. Kiss stated that major changes had nőt taken piacé in the exercise of the mechanism of pover and Ferenc Kulin stressed the danger that the Party*s conservative uing could be activated and respond to the democratisation of society with violence. Sándor Balogh said that the introduction of a one-party system in Hungary forty years ago was monstrous. Dénes Csengey pointed out that the centrálisad Stalinist model could nőt solve the probléma, it was a histori- cal failure, bút that the lack of a political aréna had meant that it had nőt suffered a political defeat until this moment. "The road to a multi-party system leads through a semi-party system" - said István Csurka referring to the fact that the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party’s monopoly of power must be restrict- ed. Many speakers (eg István Huszár the Peoples Patriotic Front’s General Secre- tary) thought that the political structure of society should appear on the political scene as well. Lajos Für, Péter Schmidt, László Sólyom and Tibor Madarász pressed fór the creation of a new democratic Parliaraent yhich represents contem- porary political movements. To the proposal that March 15th should be celebrated by the Party and alterriative organisations, Dénes Csengey stated that this would only occur if it was possible to celebrate October 23rd without prohibition or police atrocities. István Csurka, speaking about coalition proposals, said that all consensus will be false while they cannot endorse their own interests and , while the voices of the poor and downtrodden cannot be heard í Subacribers can use or quotc the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowledged. __ _ *
