"There is a worrying and scandalous contradiction- says the declaration - in the fact that leading politicians publicly stress their willingness fór dialogue and their democratic endeavours while the forces of order- on their orders - are violent. We béliévé that the time has come after thirty years fór the Hungárián state to bear the citizens’ expression of opinion with civilized self-control. We demand that the responsible political leadership prevents further similar police action in future",' ends the declaration dated June 19th and signed by three hundred and eleven Hungárián citizens. The spokespeople fór the Network of Free Initiatives have alsó published a declaration about the events. It reports on the June l6th commemoration events and the brutal police intervention, which "only succeeded in making a quiet commemoration loud and in forming a protest marchn. The declaration continues "The protesters were neither intimidated or provoked by the waves of police atrocities. The crowd bravely behaved in an orderly manner. Proving that the expanding democratic movements cannot be swept aside by violence. Proving that public order cannot be based on lies over a long period. During the June l6th protest truth marched in the streets" - ends the declaration by the Network’s spokespeople. The Prime Minister Karoly Grósz - First Secretary of the Party - in an interview with the London Financial Times defended the use of police violence and said that "1956 was a counter-revolution, it was nőt a blank spot in modern Hungárián history.
