At the same time a great protest demonstration commenced in Heroes Square in Budapest. This action vas first planned after tbelmre Nagy memóriái evening in London on June 18th in which a few Románián exiles took alsó part. Officially it vas organised by the British-Romanian Society bút in practice it vas carried out by the World Alliance of Free Romanians and the Hungárián October Freepress. Unfortunately everything vas arranged at the last minute so many people vere imable to come. The májőrity of those present vere from the Románián exiles community bút there vere somé English and Hungárián sympathisers as véli, including Róza Hódosán, Gábor Demszky’s vife, on vhose neck and anns the marks of police brutality carried out on June lóth could still be seen. The Románián banners protested pri- marily against the plán to destroy 13 000 villages and against the terror of the Ceaugescu dictatorship. There vere alsó placards demanding the release of Ion Puiu, the 70 year old ex National Peasant Party M.P., vho has already spent 17 years in prison and has nov been arrested again. The Hungárián placards demanded the preservation of Transylvanian villages and that national minority rights be secured. They alsó expressed the friendship betveen the Hungárián and Románián nations and the necessity fór a common struggle against dictators; the red-vhite- green Hungárián flag vas alsó present at the demonstration. The editor of the Hungárián October Freepress vas asked to deliver a short speech. György Krassó said a fev vords about the significance of the Budapest mass demonstration and its aims. He gave an account of the text vhich announced that protest and stressed that the incitement of national discord alvays serves the in- terests of dictators and that they vish to pút hatred in freedom’s stead. Hungar- ians and Romanians must struggle together fór democracy and restrain the tyrants. Románián refugees are present at the mass action in Budapest and the two nations are together alsó in London.
