On the sarae day an article appeared in the newspaper Magyar Hírlap (Hungárián News) entitled "A New Challenge" in which the Civil Service Workers Union made a statement about the proposed unión. The Civil Service Workers Union which works under the auspices of the Central Council of Hungárián Trade Unions believes that scientific workers can form their own sectional business federation within the existing unión and therefore a new independent unión ist/onecessary. The spokespeople fór the Scientific Workers Democratic Union (SWDU) wanted to hold the press conference in one of the Eötvös LÓránd University buildings in Bródy Sándor Street bút the university Rector withdrew his permission - given earlier - one and a half hours before it was due to start. Those who came had to go to a nearby restaurant and the press conference began here - in the Museum Restaurant*s function room - at 10.30 am. The spokespeople said that the formation of the SWDU had been concluded - its preliminary stage - and the unión would be established on May 14th. They had wanted to hold the statutory meeting between 9-5 in the university*s Natural Science Faculty and permission was received to do so foom the Deacon on April 25th. However the Rector of the university reversed the Deacon’s decision and now the meeting is nőt allowed to take piacé in the university grounds. This refusal received immediately before the press conference. The letters containing the deacon’s permission and the Rector*s refusal were passed around accompanied by the spokespeoples’ declaration of protest. In spite of this the SWDU spokespeople announced that they would keep to the original date May 14-th; the site of the meeting will be given later. Then the Foundation Committee issued their statement expressing their pleasure that the independent unión was formed on the 40th anniversary of the drafting of the in- ternational agreement on free association and the protection of the right to organise. The report says that anybody can take part in the statutory meeting who fills and gives in the application form before May 14th. In addition to research scientists, laboratory assistants in scientific units, administrators and skilled workers can alsó jóin. Members are permitted to jóin other protection of interests organisations including the "old" unión which shows that they do nőt want to oppose it bút co-operate with it. According to the report the SWDU wants to struggle "fór guarantees of conditions of existence in the widest sense, fór the immediate enforcement of a scientific policy which keeps common interests in mind, to prevent restrictions which damage Science and education, fór the recognition of research work, to utilize our results and fór democractic control over the clarity of scientific life" - so ends the SWDU’s Foundation Commitee»s report which was made public yesterday.
