László Csábi, a 31 year old Becse inhabitant, who has been in custody since January 19th was sentenced by Judge Miodrag Mali on April 11th to tvo and a half years imprisonment. The Növi Sad newspaper Magyar Szó (Hungárián Word) in its April 12th issue urote that Csábi "vilified our socialist self-governing society, social arrangements, fellowship and unity and national and national minority equal rights by his action". The Növi Sad paper referred to Csábi as an agricultural labourer; in reality he worked as a collecter of ethnographic objects and organised a Hungárián főik dance group in Becse. The dance group soon disbanded due to police intervention and Csábi was sentenced in January of this year to two and a half years imprisonment. While he was imprisoned the police collected witnesses fór his trial. Csábi*s sentence is still nőt valid yet the court keeps him on remand. On February 19th on the basis of a first degree charge of inciting national minority hatred Károly Vicéi, a Senta writer, was sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment. He received his sentence in writing from the Subotica High Court. Srdn Popovic a Belgrade lawyer - Vicéi*s defence - lodged a 70 page appeal with the Vojvodina Supreme Court asking that his client be aquitted. The prosecutor alsó appealed: he requested the court to increase the sentence. The date of the second degree trial has still nőt been fixed. In the meantime one of the Public Prosecutors witnesses - Magdolna Puskás - was pút on trial fór twice forging documents. The proceedings - as it turnéd out - were al- ready set in motion when the witness gave a police testimony against Vicéi. The Senta Court has now sentenced Magdolna Puskás to one and a half years imprisonment, bút the criminal proceedings have been suspended. Vicéi received a letter from Iván Ivanji, secretary of the Yugoslav Writers Alliance. In his letter Ivanji expresses solidarity on behalf of the Writers Alliance and protests against the suppression of free speech.
