WC1A 2HN * Tel. 01-430 2126 (Írom abroad 441-430 2126) 101/1988 (E) 27th April, 1988 The Ministry of Justice Declares That the Activities Of the Independent Legal Aid Service Are Illegal The activities of the Independent Lagal Aid Service began on April 13th in a priváté fiat in Budapest, its aim is to offer legal aid this includes documenting injustices and revealing the lessons to be leamt from them, The colleagues in. the service are available every Wednesday and Friday afternoon,* in the last two weeks many people have come to them with their grievances. The four organisers of the Legal Aid Service - Dr. Gábor Demszky, Ferenc Kőszeg, Imre Mécs and Ottília Solt -, and the fiat tenant Tibor Philipp received a letter last week from the Ministry of Justice which asked them to visit the Director of the Ministry*s Ghambers in order to discuss questions connected with their initia- tive. The summons all boré different dates and times fór each person so they wrote a reply saying that to avoid unecessary time wasting they would appear at the same time on Wednesday April 12th at 10 am. The Director and his colleague adopted a polite tone with the five summoned individuals. They said that the Ministry did nőt want to engage in a political debate bút that they wanted to issue a statement confirming that the organisation of legal aid Services can only be carried out by institutes Iáid down in the regulations and thus the operation of the Independent Legal Aid Service was illegal. The organisers were requested to cease their activities bút they made a statement saying that although the prevailing legal system does nőt ensure the exercise of democratic rights fór its citizens it does nőt forbid free aid in any of its regulations.
