It was accepted by the Holy Father, who asked Dr.Ijjas to continue as Archbishop until appropriate measures had been taken for appointing a successor (November). Bishops Conferences Archbishop László Lékai, the new Primate of Hungary, presided over the Hungarian Catholic Bishops Conference for the first time at this year's spring session (16 March). He used this occasion to state that from August 1-8 he would be heading a delega­tion of priests and lay persons who would attend the World Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia. He also said that he had been made a member of the Roman Congrega­tion for Religious Education. József Cserháti, the secretary of the Hungarian Bishops Conference, gave a report on the meeting in Freiburg of the secretaries of Bishops Conferences. He also re­ported on the activity of the Secretariate, on the financial situation of the Hungarian Bishops Conference and on the topics on the agenda of the Bishops Synod to be held in Rome in 1977. Bishop Imre Kisberk, the head of Hungary's Liturgy Commission, reported on the forthcoming new liturgical texts. Bishop Laszlo Kádár, the president of the National Council for Sacred Art and Monuments, reported on the matters taken up by the Council. He made the suggestion that the concern for the protection of religious monuments should be given a place both in the theological preparation and continued education of priests. He also made the recommendation that a handbook on this subject for theologians be com­piled and published. In addition, the Bishops Conference discussed courses for training cantors, the situation of the 8 Church schools, the inner remodeling of the Central Seminary, and the restoration of the Papal Hungarian Institute in Rome. The latter project would take two years and during this time it would not be possible to send priests or students on scholarships to study in Rome. It was announced that the Austrian Pastoral Institute had invited a bishop and several members of the Priests Senate in Hungary to attend a meeting of represent­atives of the European Priests Senates. During the summer session (3-4 June) a letter sent to the Hungarian Bishops Con­ference by Archbishop Bernardin, the President of the Bishops Conference of the United States, was read to the bishops present. Bishop Cserháti reported on the results of the Christian Conference held in Prague and the ecumenical talks held with the Protestant Churches in Washington in which he had taken part.
