HIS Press Service, A Review of 1976 Rage 11 No New Era Visible A noticeable beginning of a new era in Church life in connection with the designation of László Lékai as Archbishop of Esztergom has yet to occur. The number of persons whose expectations in this area have been disappointed is increasing. The Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal König, made reference to this in an interview published in the December 1976 issue of the "Lutherische Monatshefte." It is his opinion that the Church faces a more difficult situation in Hungary than in the other Eastern European countries, and this because of the general spirit of doubt and resignation present among the Hungarian faithful. It was inevitable that the numerous and varied expectations connected by many persons with the renewal of the Hungarian Church would lead to disappointment. One can only hope that those who, despite the difficulties of the present, continue to believe in a new era for Hungary's Church will be proven right. FROM THE LIFE OF HUNGARY'S CHURCH IN 1976 Relations with Rome As representatives of the Vatican, Archbishop Poggi and Mueros F.Sainz, the Secretary of the Nunciature, carried on negotiations with the government in Budapest on current questions of interest to both parties (19-24 January) Pope Paul VI named László Lêkai, Esztergom's Apostolic Administrator, to be the new archbishop of Esztergom. József Ijjas, Archbishop of Kalocsa, was named Assistant to the Papal Throne (12 February). Archbishop Lékai received the pallium from the Holy Father in Rome (29 March). Pope Paul VI named Titular Bishop Kornél Pataky, the Apostolic Administrator of Győr, to be the new diocesan bishop; Rev.László Tóth was appointed Titular Bishop and Auxiliary of Veszprém (12 April). Pope Paul raised László Lêkai, Archbishop of Esztergom, to the rank of Cardinal. The Secretary of State Imre Miklós, who is head of the government Bureau of Church Affairs, took part in the festivities in Rome and used the occasion to carry on negotiations with Archbishop Casaroli (24 May). The Holy Father presented the pallium to Mihály Endrey, Bishop of Vác (July). In Budapest, Archbishop Luigi Poggi carried on negotiations with government representatives (26 September).
