Tanulmányok - Szendiné Orvos Erzsébet: Debrecen 1604-ben

46 Szendiné Orvos Erzsébet: Debrecen 1604-ben Debrecen in 1604 Mrs Szendi, nee Erzsébet Orvos In her paper the author glances into Debrecen city in the year 1604. The city - due to its positioning — paid homage in three directions: paid the Turkish taxes, was strongly dependent on the Transylvanian rulers, and besides these two masters, as a third, served the royal country region also. The paying homage in three directions often placed the city leaders in a difficult situation, a good example of which is the case of Borzán Gáspár, produced on the stage by Szabó Magda. The essay examines the literary background of the production. Its objective is to present the economic, social, political and cultural life of Debrecen 400 years ago, in connection with the anniversary of Bocskai’s fight for freedom. Viewing all of this, the author established that Debrecen was Eastern Hungary’s most significant city in the examined period. Even during the Turkish occupation it was capable - in truth at the price of great sacrifices - of developing in the economic and cultural areas, of safeguarding its own life style and preserving this for its offspring of a more peaceful era.
