Family relationships of potters in Debrecen in the 18 and 19th centuries Emőke P. Szalay

The potters’guild of Debrecen, which developed one of the most ancient pottery styles, dates back to the middle of the 16th century. A fairly rich archive documentation has survived about the craft, so the family relations among the 510 potters, known from different sources, can frequently be reconstructed. The overwhelming majority of the 419 potters, mostly from the 18th—19th centuries, were members of 76 families. The number of masters from families occurring only once is much less. In folk pottery, the similarities that can ben discovered among the different style centres can be traced back to connections among the masters working there. We hope that this publication of potters’ names from Debrecen will give further details for the revelation of connections between the centres.

Дебреценский гончарный цех, который создал один из самых старых гончарных стилей, уходит своими корнями в середину XVI века. Про этот цех остался довольно богатый архив, благодаря чему между 510 гончарами, известными из других всевозможных источников, можно реконструировать в большинстве случаев родственные связи.

Из 510 гончаров XVIII—XIX веков решающая часть, 419 человек происходили из 76 семей. Значительно меньше число мастеров, прославившихся своим единственным произведением. В народном гончарном искусстве среди отдельных центров стилей можно заметить схожесть, что говорит о связях между работающими здесь мастерами. Надеемся, что сообщением имен дебреценских гончаров мы поможем дальнейшему раскрытию связей между отдельными центрами.
