Summary Mode of life of parish priests in the dioceses of Győr and Szombathely (West-Hungary) in the 18th century 18th century lifestyle of parish priests of the dioceses Győr and Szombathely is demonstrated in the study, based primarily on last will documents (testaments, inventories, auction proceedings), ecclesiastical inspection reports and vicegerent council’s files, however, illustrated with a rather limited number of examples for the time being. The Diocese of Szombathely seceded from the Diocese of Győr in 1777, accordingly, the research had to be undertaken in the Diocesan Archives of both Szombathely and Győr. The articles characterizing the mode of life of parish priests disclose the same type of duality that was observed by researchers in the mode of life of the petty gentries’ class: the stamps of peasantry and of nobility were almost equally present. Moreover, the peasant features prevailed frequently. Wooden plate appear among the dishes also in the priests’ inventories. On the contrary, their indoor storage furniture followed the civilian standard, they used almost exclusively cupboards (sideboards). By the 18th century, silver and tin articles, as festive requisites appeared also in the possession of parish priests; in this respect and also in other dwelling relations they adhered to the pattern of the petty gentries. On the other hand, becoming petty gentry could represent the next step to higher social standing for parish priests of a serf. Farming tools did not differ significantly at that time from the tools used by peasants. The existence of an iron seed harrow in Ják indicates that they endeavoured to apply new fashioned tool types, as well. In other relations, too, parish priests were receptive to novelties. In 1784 the chaplain of Gasztony purchased coffee cups at an auction. Further research, with a more ample set of documents may modify or re-tone the present conclusions, and we might be able to trace geographic diversity, too. 52 Kisbán Eszter. A kávé bevezetése.
