corpus mandibulae is slender and thin with small tusks and teeth. The mandibular symphysis turns down, does not yet bend backward. The dimensions of molars comparing to that of the premolars are smaller. The length of M~i and M2 are equivalent. The broadth of equivalent to P4, or somewhat less; the broadth of M2 is slightly wider. S. SZAKÁLL (museologist, HERMAN Otto Museum, Miskolc) visited the Putnok coal mine in autumn 1987, when he received and brought the remains first to the Herman Otto Museum, Miskolc, later to the Paleontological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest on 16. 12. 1987. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODEINOTHERIUM PETENYII REMAINS Mandible (Plate I, II) Both corpora mandibulae and the symphysis with the tusks were found together. They are in a highly fragmentary condition because of the mechanical hewing. Because of the squeeze of soil, the left part of the symphysis together with the tusk had slightly bent upwards, became distorted (Plate I). Therefore, after the conservation and reconstruction works had been completed by J. LÖRINCZ, no permanent fixing of the two adjoining rami mandibulae was made because of storage conditions. Right mandible (Plate I: 1-3) The length of the fragment is 480 mm. The ramus mandibulae has broken off, absent. The posterior wall of corpus is intact, its anterior part is fragmented. There are 3 foramina mentalia on it in the middle (Plate I: 1). The distance between the post, and medial for. mentalia is 55 mm. The length of the pars symphysis medial sagitt. is 190 mm, its largest (outer) breadth is 105 mm. The lingua-channel longitudinally is slightly convex. On each side of the lingual surface of the symphysis, from the alveoli of the tusks till the anterior arcus alveoli of the Pg a high labium with broad base runs. (Plate I: 1, 2). The distance between the labiums (ribs) is 50 mm. The length of the right side diastema is 215 mm. In the lower, fragmentary surface of the symphysis carbonaceous clay is found. Left mandible (Plate II: 1-3) The length of the fragment is 560 mm. The height of the ramus mandibulae part is 240 mm. The outer wall of the collum mandibulae is intact, in the middle of it there are 3 for. mentalia (Plate II: 1). The distance between the post, and medial for. mentalia is 37 mm. Table 1. On the mandible it can be determinable in general, that the corpora mandibulae are small and thin; the height of the corpus mandibulae from Mo to the frontal margin of P3 ora^ ly gradually increasing; while its breadth (thickness) gradually decreasing (Table 1).
