On the middle of the outer wall of the collum mandibulae there are 3 foramina mentalies: the posterior for. mentale between the P3/4; the medial for. mentale lies before the Pg; the anterior for. mentale is 28 mm from the previous one. The two latter for. mentales are already part of the symphysis (Plate I: 1; II: 1). The cross section of the corpus at the Pg - M. section is slightly wider, oval above. Aborally, backwards from the septum of the Mj/2 the _basis m^ndibulae_ laterally becomes narrower and at the ang. mandibulae it forms a 45 mm high crest (Plate II: 3). The lower crest thickness of the basis mandibulae below My2 is 65 mm. The greatest breadth (width) of the corpus mandibulae at the same place is 84 mm (Table 1), while the breadth of the angulus mandibulae is only 20 mm. The upper wide pars alveolaris of the corpus is aborally, gradually thickening (widening); into its inner part the alveoli of M2 and Mg deepen. The interalveolar septa between the teeth are thick. The symphysis and the tusks of the mandible - dissimilarly to the other Deinotheres known so far - are not down-recurved but point rather slightly forwards-downwards (Plate I, II). The deflection of the symphysis in the Prodeinotherium mandibles from Putnok is 20-2 5°. Tusks (Plate I) The tusks are small and short. They are slightly curved downwards along their longitudinal axis. The tusks point forwards-downwards and are divergent. The cross-section of the tusks is rounded-oval (Fig. 1. A.)'The whole length of the left side tusk is 230 mm; its tip had been worn off to be pointed in the lat. med. side (Plate I). The part of the right side tusk that sticks out from the alveolus is 75 mm long. On its tip only its upper/ forepart side is worn off. The length of the worning surface is 48 mm. The diameter of the tusk measured at the alveolus: vertically 38, horizontally 31 mm. The greatest diameter of the left side tusk; vertically 40, horizontally 33 mm. A B Fig. 1 Cross section of the tusk of Prodeinotherium A. P. petenyii tusk from Putnok. 1:1 B. P. hungaricum tusk from Kotyháza (After ÉHIK 19 30, Fig. 1, 1:1/2) Tooth-row (Plate III, IV, V) The teeth-row is nearly complete. The left side Pg and P4 are fragmentary. The Mg is missing from both alveoli, it is lost. The deep and big alveolus of the M 3 indicates, that the crown of the tooth was already spring into line; it was not embryonic. The Pg-Mg alv. length of the left side teeth-row is 26 5 mm. The alv. length of the P 3 _4 teeth row is 80 mm; the alv. length of the M 1-3 teeth row is 185 mm. The Pg-Mg alv. length of the right side teeth row is 2 58 mm; that of the P3.4 teeth row is 73 mm; the alv. length of the M^_ 3 teeth row is 182 mm. Teeth (Plate III, IV, V) The teeth are brachyodont with strong, long roots. The root of the M 2 is twice as long (62 mm) as the height of the crown (30 mm\ The teeth are generally unworn; only the 3rd lophid of the right side Mj is worn all along. The lateral tips of the 2nd lophids on both sides Mj-s are still triangular.
