Gere Records to the butterfly fauna of Ba Be National Park, Vietnam (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea, Hesperioidea) — 79 butterfly species were collected in Ba Be National Park, Vietnam in October 1996. They represent nine families. INTRODUCTION I collected butterflies in the Ba Be National Park from October 28-30, 1996, during my research trip to Vietnam. There are several species of interesting vertebrates in the area that are known to be in need of protection, but hardly anything is known about invertebrates, including butterflies. My investigation has shown that in this area a diverse butterfly fauna is existing. For this reason, I publish a list of species I found, and I consider that further research is needed. DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA Ba Be, located in the northern part of Vietnam (in Bac Thai Province), has been formalised as a national park in 1992 (Sung, 1995). The exact geographical location is given in this source as 22° 24'N and 105° 37' E. The mean annual temperature is 22 °C. The extremes of temperature are: 0.6-39 °C. The average humidity is 83%. The average rainfall per year is 1378 mm. The number of rainy days per year is 33.3. The total area of the park is 7611 ha, 73.5% of which is covered by forest, and 20.1% is grassland. There is a lake in the middle of the park, with an area of 50 ha. The soil has generally high iron-content (feralitic) and it is either reddish-yellow or dark red on limestone. 1000-1500 meter high limestone mountains cover and surround a good part of the area.
