FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LX 1999 pp. 213-230 Checklist of Spercheidae, Hydrochidae, Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae and Hydraenidae of Hungary (Coleoptera) Z. Csabai and Gy. Szél Checklist of Spercheidae, Hydrochidae, Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae and Hydraenidae of Hungary (Coleoptera) — An updated species list of five beetle families of Hungary is given. All changes since Endrődy-Younga (1967) are summarized. A total of 23 genera and 139 species are known to occur in Hungary. The occurrence of two further genera and 46 species is expected. INTRODUCTION The release of the part treating "Palpicornia" in the series Fauna Hungáriáé (Endrődy-Younga 1967) was a major achievement in Hungarian coleopterological research. S. Endrődy-Younga summarized all the available information about Hydrophilids and gave keys for the subfamilies and all the species. Traditionally, the series also treats the fauna of the rest of the Carpathian Basin, therefore, the author lists 120 species that are known from the area of Hungary and a further 33 known only from neighbouring areas. The group has undergone major revision, and is subject to changes even today. As a result the mentioned work, although was up-to-date in the sixties, it is practically useless today, save only some of the treated genera. The main types of changes are the following: 1. Changes in taxonomic status. a. The subfamilies Hydraeninae and Limnebiinae were separated from the family Hydrophilidae and were subsequently placed in the family Hydraenidae in the superfamily Staphylinoidea. Hydrochinae, Helophorinae and Spercheinae were also separated from Hydrophilidae and these taxa are now considered as families. b. Some infraspecific categories were raised to specific level (e.g. Helophorus guttulus ab. brevipalpis Bedel, 1881 - Helophorus brevipalpis Bedel, 1881). c. Some species were transferred to other genera (e.g. Ochthebius narentinus Reitter, 1885 - Aulacochthebius narentinus (Reitter, 1885)). 2. Synonymies. a. Some of the species treated in 1967 as distinct species were synonymized (e.g. Helophorus fallax Kuwert, 1886 - Helophorus pumilio Erichson, 1837).
