5(2) Larger, 8-9 mm long species. Mesopleuron wrinkled. Penis valve and projection from eighth tergite as in Fig. 3 trisignatus (Förster, 1854) sp. rev. 6(1) Projection from eighth tergite rounded at apex with an apical medial sulcus more or less developed, giving rise basally to a medial carina (Figs 2 and 5). Spur on penis valve alongside ventral flap. 7(8) Projection from eighth tergite and penis valve as in Fig. 2. Smaller species: 6-7 mm truncatus Benson, 1948 8(7) Projection from eighth tergite and penis valve as in Fig. 5. Larger species: 7-7.5 mm xanthocarpus (Hartig, 1840) The name „truncatus" refers to „Projection from eighth tergite subtruncate at apex" (Benson, 1958). Unfortunately, it is a clitellatus feature and not of truncatus. The other open question concerns the species of P. clitellatus (Lepeletier, 1823) - P. truncatus Benson, 1948 - P.foveolatus Konow, 1904. Konow's description is based on a single male only. Lindqvist (1961) examined the genitalic structure of this specimen and concluded that truncatus is identical whhfoveolatus: „Von dieser sibirischen (Irkutsk) Art bespricht Konow erst das cT , das durch ein Exemplar in seiner Sammlung vertreten ist bei der Untersuchung der Genitalien ging hervor, dass fovaolatus mit truncatus Bens, identisch ist". In reality the examined specimen is attached to the clitellatus, since he did not know about Benson's mistake. Consequently, P.foveolatus Konow is a synonym of P. clitellatus Lepeletier.
