(Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae) from Algeria. - Description of a new thrips species: Melanthrips pelikani sp. n. from Algeria. Mr. and Mrs. Rozner during their collecting trip in Algeria have collected Thysanoptera, too. This material comprises a series of a new Melanthrips species. This new species is named after Dr. Jaroslav Pelikán, a prominent specialist of the genus Melanthrips. Diagnosis Body yellowish-white, only abdominal segment X dark. Sense areas on segments III and IV nearly round. Antenna! segments I-IV yellow, whitish-yellow, apical end of segment IV darkish, segments V-IX darkish grey. The wings colourless, costa with setae alternating with accessory setae. Postocular row consists of 3 pairs of long, strong and dark setae. The body with conspicuously long, strong and dark pointed setae. Hind tibiae without preapical setae. The fore margin of sternites II-VII with dark transverse postmarginal band. Description Female: Total length 1730 pm. Head length 176 pm, width 175 p.m. Cheecks rounded, vertex with very fine transverse striation. Two pairs of anteocellar setulae present. Interocellar setae strong standing in normal position, 75-80 urn long. The posterior ocellar setulae small, 12-13 um long. Three pairs of long, strong setae in the postocular row, their length from the middle 70-75 urn, 70-75 pm, 75-80 urn, respectively. Behind the eyes two short lateral bristle present. Mouth cone short, rounded, 100 pm long. Antennae are elongate, slender, 390 pm long. Dimensions of segments: I 27-28 (31), II 42-43 (28), III 67 (19), IV 65 (17-18), V 50 (16), VI 52 (16), VII 38 (16), VIII 19 (11), IX 25 (9) pm. Antenna! segments I-II and V-IX rounded, III and IV elongate with parallel sides and segment III with narrow pedicel. Sense areas on segments III and IV nearly round. Pronotum 150 pm long, 240 pm broad. Anteromarginal setae 65 pm, anteroangular setae 65 pm long, with three stout accessory setae from the middle: 26, 32,41 pm long, respectively. Middle lateral setae 88 urn, posteroangular setae 98 pm, posteromarginal setae 75 pm long. There are six setae approximately of the same size, their length from the middle: 36-37; 45-47; 50-60; 42-50; 41-50; 42-47 pm. On the surface of pronotum there are 13 short ( 24-32 pm), stout steae.
