Hesperus fraudator sp.n. This species is one of a number which all closely resemble each other but which can be separated by obvious characters. From most of its near relatives it differs by the shorter antennae, their compressed segments, the compression being more obvious in the centre of each and also by the last few being transverse . The species has only three punctures in the two rows on the pronotum and this separates it from several other species to which it bears a close resemblance. The head and pronotum have the same strong metallic reflection as in H . modulatus Last and H. alber- tisi (Fauv.), and Philonthus pressus Last but the pronotal punctures and structure of the antennae separates it from them all. Head and pronotum black with metallic sheen, antennae with basal three segments reddish, apical three dusky cream-coloured, otherwise black; elytra blue with central purple patch; abdomen black with extreme margin of seventh tergite yellow; legs reddish-yellow. Head transverse (4:3), very shining with very distinct alutaceous microsculpture in an arcshaped pattern, with large punctures along inner margins of eyes, there are also a number of minute punctures irregularly placed within the microsculpture; eyes not very convex, their longitudinal diameter longer than the temples (3:2.5), antennae with third segment a little longer than the second, segments four to eleven compressed, especially in the centre of each, from this angle the segments are transverse, last segment equal to the two penultimate together, all segments with rather long apical setae. Pronotum a little longer than broad (9:8), shining, with distinct alutaceous microsculpture which runs obliquely to the median line which in a side light is seen as a depression which does not meet either the anterior or posterior margins; with two rows of three punctures, with others laterally bearing long bristles, slightly narrowing to the posterior margin. Elytra about as long as broad, not shining, very finely and densely punctured and pubescent; with long lateral bristles, the suture narrowly bordered. Scutellum strongly and densely punctured. Abdomen moderately shining, with extremely fine microsculpture, strongly and moderately densely punctured, the punctures elongate and open-ended, with conspicuous long bristles. Legs with tibiae strongly spinose, those of anterior and intermediate strongly setose. Length 16 mm. Holotype p. unique, Madang District, Finisterre Mts., Budemu, c 4000 ft., 15-24.10.1964 (M.E. Bacchus), Stn. No. 51 B.M. 1965-120. Hesperus glaucus sp.n. Bather similar in several respects to H. copiosus (Last), but larger, the elytra strikingly green and not very shining with far fewer punctures . Head, pronotum, scutellum and abdomen black, legs, palpi and antennae yellow, segments six to nine which are darker, elytra blue-green. Head transverse (6:4.75), orbicular without microsculpture shining, eyes not very convex, their longitudinal diameter equal to the length of the temples which are rounded and have one or two long black bristles and others along the inner margins of the eyes . Antennae with second segment a little shorter than the third, considerably shorter than the first, segments four to seven longer than broad, each a little shorter than the previous, segment eight as broad as long, nine and ten slightly transverse, last segment longer than penultimate, asymmetrical; last segment of maxillary palpi darkened at the apex. Pronotum as broad as long, almost parallel-sided but with a small sinuation very near the posterior corners, without microsculpture, shining, with a pronotal series of four punctures, with slender bristles of differing lengths near the anterior corners. Elytra a little longer than broad (8:7) without microsculpture, very shining, with a suturai row of very small punctures bordered by five or six larger punctures; there is a humeral row and a few scattered punctures between with lateral bristles; suture narrowly bordered. Scutellum large, shining. Abdomen very sparingly punctured, with a fine alutaceous microsculpture; with long fine lateral bristles. Legs spinose and setose, anterior tarsi broadened in the female and presumably in both sexes. Length 9-10 mm. Holotype p New Guinea, Lufa 11.1971. Paratypes 2 ex p, Daullo Pass, New Guinea, 25.IV. 1971 (1 ex), Marifuanga, Asaro-Chimba Divide, 23.6.1972 (1 ex) paratypes, Gizabip 5000 ft., Star Mts. 20.X. 1975, Mt. Hagen VII. 1974 (B . Hornabrook). Hesperus solivagus sp.n. This species is smaller than H. glaucus Last i.l., the colour of the elytra is almost the same shade of green, but they are a little more densely punctured, the antennae are differently coloured. It is a little smaller than H. copiosus Last, but the head and pronotum are dull blue,
