of antennae very long, at least twice the length of the third, segments four to ten longer than broad, but each a little shorter than the previous, last two segments about as broad as long, three basal segments shining without pubescence, others with very fine short pubescence and each segment having apical bristles. Pronotum longer than broad (10:8.75), moderately shining, with alutaceous microsculpture, and pronotal rows each of two punctures and with minute punctures similar to those of the head but more indiscriminately placed, with larger lateral punctures with long outstanding bristles; anterior corners well marked, posterior corners more rounded; nearly parallel-sided. Elytra longer than board (6:5), shining, rather densely and finely punctured and with larger bristle-bearing punctures, without microsculpture, but with long lateral bristles; sinuate at postero-external corners; suture raised and bordered. Scutellum densely punctured, with fine microsculpture. Abdomen shining, with extremely fine transverse microsculpture; base of tergites with large dense elongate punctures, open ended, each tergite with apical spines, which are longer from paratergites . Legs setose and tibiae spinose. Length 16 mm. Holotype p unique, Morobe Dist. Edle CK, Bulldog Road, 9, 700 ft. 20.9.1964 (M.E.Bacchus, B.M. 1965-120) Stn. No. 18. Hesperus confusus sp.n. This species is similar in colouration to H. Candidus Last, but the segments of the antennae are longer, the head is not so transverse and the elytra have the puncturation a little finer and denser. In some respects it is also similar to H. modulatus (Last) but differs in the absence of microsculpture on the head and pronotum, in the puncturation of the elytra being less dense, the scutellum having much sparser puncturation and the abdomen being also less densely punctured. It is nearest to P. hornabrooki Last, and differs only by having the elytra more densely punctured, the colour which is brassy green without the coppery-red of hornabrooki. and having only the last segment of the antennae creamy-white, although this last character is inclined to vary, in fact the two paratypes do have the last two segments white (Aedeagus Fig. 19). Black, except the elytra which are brassy-green and the last segment of the antennae which is cream-coloured. Head transverse (8.5:6), shining, with extremely fine and indistinct microsculpture with only a few large punctures on temples and on the inner margins of the eyes; the longitudinal diameter of the eyes are longer than the temples (3:2.5), antennae with third segments longer than the second, but shorter than the first, segments four to seven longer than broad, eight to ten becoming shorter, last segment longer than the penultimate which is acuminate. Pronotum as long as broad, shining, without microsculpture with dorsal rows of four punctures, with lateral punctures especially at anterior corners which are more convex, posterior corners rounded, laterally sinuate at posterior third. Elytra longer than broad (5:4), shining, without microsculpture, moderately finely and densely punctured with sub-erect setae and lateral bristles; a broad suturai border, weakly sinuate at posterior corners. Scutellum very finely and sparingly punctured. Abdomen without microsculpture, not densely punctured, with rather long slender bristles, narrowing to the apex. Legs long and slender, the intermediate and posterior tarsi almost equal in length to the tibiae; spinose, especially anterior tibiae, and setose. Length 15-16 mm. Holotype p, Goroka, 8400 ft, 18.2.71, paratypes Marifuanga, Asaro-Chimbu Divide 10.6.72 (1 ex p), Daulo Pass, Asato-Chimbu Divide 16.9.72 (1 ex S). (R. Hornabrook). Hesp e rus mixtus (Last) 1968 J.Nat.Hist. 2, 1968: 366. Amongst staphylined material taken by Mr. M.E. BACCHUS, there were seven specimens of this species. Data as follows, Madang Dist. Finisterre Mts., Moro c 5550 ft. 30.X-15.XI.1964 (6 ex) Finisterre Mts., Budemo c 4000 ft. 15-24.V. 1964 (1 ex). The Holotype was a female and all the above specimens were also females. The seventh tergite in this sex is sinuate which is quite unusual in this genus as this character is mostly exhibited in the corresponding male sternite. Hesperus caulis sp.n. Comparing this species with H. multiformis Last, the elytra are more strongly punctured, the legs are differently coloured and the antennae are more robust, the species is larger. The puncturation of the elytra is rather similar to that of H. excelsus Cam., but a little stronger and the antennae are more robust.
