Abdomen with extre­mely fine transverse microsculpture, not densely punctured, but these are large, elliptical and shallow at posterior ends. Legs strongly spinose. Length 10 mm. Holotype unique o, Blackwater River, Sepik, 6.1974 (R . Hornabrook). Philonthus bellatulus sp. n. This species is a little smaller than P. cheesmani Cam., the antennae are shorter with the segments more transverse; it has two rows of four pronotal punctures, cheesmani has only three in each row. The elytra has the same colour green, but the puncturation is much stronger and not so dense, the scutellum is much less densely punctured, the legs are bi-coloured (in cheesmani they are completely red). Black, elytra green, last two segments of antennae cream coloured, basal two thirds of tibiae, yellow. Head transverse (5.75:4), moderately shining without microsculpture, without punctures, except the large inter-ocular, and others on the temples where there are a few slender bristles, of various lengths; second segment of antennae a little shorter than the third, segments four and five much shorter, but a little longer than broad, segment six quadrate, segments seven to ten moderately transverse, last segments a little longer than the penultimate, eyes not convex, their longitudinal diameter equal to the length of the temples.
