derately shining, without microsculpture, with two rows of four punctures, and others laterally and at anterior corners with long bristles, very weakly sinuate at posterior third, anterior corners more distinct than at posterior corners which are rounded. Elytra as long as broad, shining, strongly but not densely punctured, without microsculpture, with short bristles which are longer along lateral margins, suture broadly bordered. Scutellum rather densely punctured. Abdomen shining, without microsculpture, strongly but not densely punctured at base of tergites, the punctures elongate arcs open at posterior end; with rather long bristles, abdomen narrowing towards apex. Legs strongly splnose, first segment of posterior pair equal to the three following. Length 10 mm. Holotype £ Goroka, 1.1973, paratype o Karimui, 4.1973 (R . Hornabrook). Philonthus honestus sp.n. This species is very similar to P. takaiensis Last, the unmistakable difference is in the structure of the aedeagus (Figs. 1 to 4). The head is a little smaller and the elytra are slightly less closely punctured, also it does not have the greenish-black colour of the head and pronotum. Black, the last one or two segments of the antennae yellowish; the elytra has obscure green or mauve reflections. Head as long as broad, without punctures except a few near inner margins of the eyes and on temples, which have long bristles, with extremely fine microsculpture; eyes moderately convex, their longitudinal diameter equal to the length of the temples; antennae with all segments longer than broad, third segment longer than the second, both much shorter than the first, segments four to six of equal length about as long as the second, segments seven to ten each a little shorter, last segment a little longer than the penultimate, asymmetrically acuminate, with long slender bristles. Pronotum as long as broad, moderately shining, with two rows of four punctures each, and a few laterally, bearing long outstanding bristles, with very fine alutaceous microsculpture, anterior margin more convex than the posterior margin, where the corners are more rounded. Elytra a little longer than broad, shining, moderately densely and strongly punctured with long setae, interstices wider than diameter of punctures, with larger punctures, sparse and irregular, with long lateral bristles; suture bordered. Scutellum finely punctured and pubescent. Abdomen sparingly punctured, with long bristles, narrowing to the apex. Legs setose and spinose, long, especially the posterior tarsi. Length 15 mm. Holotype S Mount Hägen 7.-1974, paratypes, Daulo Pass, Asaro-Chimbu Divide 25.1.1975 (1 ex o). Marifuanga, Asaro-Chimbu Divide 27.10.1972 (1 ex o). Lufa, Mount Michael 15.12.1974 (1 ex p). Marawaka, Eastern Highlands 5.1974 (1 ex o). Bultem 5000 ft. Star Mts. 23.10.1975 (1 ex p) (R. Hornabrook). Philonthus dignus Last 1968 var. uniformis var.n. This specimen differs from the Type by having the basal five segments of the antennae, red (in the Type the basal three are red). The elytra are completely greenish-blue (in the Type the base is red and also the suture and scutellum), in uniformis the scutellum is black, the abdomen is also black compared with red in the Type, the pronotal punctures are four in each row, three in dignus Last, the aedeagus is identical so It is a variety. Holotype S (var. uniformis) Garaina, Bulu Valley, New Guinea, 1.8.1970 (R . Hornabrook) (Figs. 4A - 4B). Philonthus intermistus Last, 1968 J.Nat.Hist., 2: 354. Gawe, Morawaka, Eastern Highlands 8.5.1974 (1 ex o). Philonthus specialis Cam. var. funebris var.n. This variety differs from the type form in having the head and pronotum black. Holotype 6* Managalase Plateau, Northern District, Papua, Nov. 1972 (R. Hornabrook). Philonthus vegetus Last, 1968 J.Nat.Hist., 2: 363. This distinctive species with its yellow-red humeral spot on the elytra, was described from a single female specimen taken by Dr. R. Hornabrook, Okapa, XII. 1964, the type deposited in the
