British Museum (Nat. Hist.). The specimen taken by M.E. Bacchus, Madang district, Flnnesterre Mts. Budemu c 4000 ft,» 15-24.X. 1964 is a male, from which I have been able to draw the aedeagus (Fig. 5). This is also In the Brit. Mua. (Nat.Hist.) collection. Species having two rowB of five punctures on the pronotum Philonthus bacchus sp.n. This species is similar in colouration to P. bicoloratus Cam., but the puncturation of the elytra is stronger and less dense. It is also similar to Hesperus andonarensis Cam., the Holotype p specimen in the collection of the British Museum (Nat.Hist.) bears the following label "Labaenarang Andonare 2-4000, Doherty XI), but bacchus differs by having denser puncturation of the elytra and the scutellum, and the base of the tergites do not have the dense puncturation of andonarensis, the head and pronotum also have a fine alutaceous microaculpture which is abaent in that species. Head, segmenta four to eight of antennae, scutellum and base of segments three to six black, maxillary palpi, first three and last three segmenta of the antennae, pronotum elytra and legs, also apical margins of tergites three to six and the whole of seven and eight, red. Head broader than long (5.5:4.5), shining, with rather large inter-ocular punctures and others on inner margins of the eyes and on the temples, all with long black bristles; with a very fine transverse alutaceous microaculpture, antennae with the second segment a little shorter than the first and third, segments four to eight longer than broad, but each a little shorter than the previous, segments nine and ten as long as broad, last segment a little longer than the penultimate and obliquely truncate at the apex; first aix aegmenta with outstanding setae, others pubescent; eyes not convex, their longitudinal diameter shorter than the temples (3:4) which are almost parallel-sided, with posterior corners rounded but distinct. Pronotum slightly transverse (5.5:5), moderately shining, with fine alutaceous microaculpture, pronotal rows each with five large punctures; anterior corners well marked, posterior corners broadly rounded, with long lateral bristles. Elytra as broad as long, shining, without microsculpture, strongly, evenly, but not very densely punctured, with fine short setae, and moderately long lateral bristles. Scutellum strongly punctured and pubescent and with transverse alutaceous microsculpture. Abdomen finely, but not densely punctured, with longer bristles at the apex of paratergites, microsculpture extremely fine and hardly perceptible (Aedeagus, Figs. 6 —7). Legs with tibiae spinose. Length 9 mm. Holotype <? unique, Madang Dlst. Finisterre Mts. Damanti, 3,550 ft. 2-11.X. 1964. Stn No. 33 (M.E. Bacchus) B.M. 1965-120. Philonthus egelegus sp.n. There are a small number of species of both the Philonthus and the Hesperus genera which have characteristic long median lobes to the aedeagus. This new species is one of them and in this respect resembles P. buanaensis Last, but the median lobe is very strongly bent and the paramere is longer and has fewer "pegs" on the inner face, and these are situated at the extremity (Figs. 8—9). The species is considerably smaller than b uanaenais, with the puncturation of the elytra denser, the legs paler, and the segments of the antennae more transverse. The puncturation of the elytra is almost identical to that of P . macnamarae Cam. except that the antennae is more robust, the abdomen more strongly punctured and the aedeagus is different, furthermore the pronotal rows each comprise only five, in macnamarae they number six. Black, base and apex of antennae and legs red or reddish. Head transverse (5:4), moderately shining, with a very fine and obscure microaculpture, with a triangular depression between the base of the antennae as in P. rectangulus Sharp ., with four conspicuous large punctures forming a rectangle round the vertex, also with a few further punctures near inner margins of the eyes and on temples; eyes not convex, their longitudinal diameter equal to the temples which also have a few slender bristles. Antennae with first four segments longer than broad but the fourth much shorter than the previous, segments five and six quadrate, segments seven to ten transverse, last segment asymmetrically acuminate; all segments with setae, longer at the base. Pronotum as long as broad, moderately shining, with diagonal microsculpture, pronotal rows each of five punctures, anterior cornera distinct with strong bristles, posterior cornera more rounded, laterally with strong moderately long briatles. Elytra as broad as long, a little narrower at "ahoulders", densely punctured and pubescent, dull, with long lateral setae, a little broader than the pronotum, raised at suturai borders. 1 21
