FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK (SERIES NOVA) XXXII. 1. 1979 P- S 5 " 64 Damaeidae (Acari: Oribatei) collected by the Hungarian Soil Zoological Expeditions to South America By R. A. NORTON (Received 5 March, 1979) Abstract: Description of 3 new South American Damaeidae species (Epidamaeus ^Epidamaeus/ flagelloides sp. n., Epidamaeus /Akrodamaeus/ meridianus sp.n. and Dyobelba armata sp. n. ). Metabelba flagellata Bal. et Mah. , 1969 = Epidamaeus (Akrodamaeus) flagellatus (Bal, et Mah., 1969) comb. nov. Although the mite family Damaeidae (sensu latu) appears to be most diverse in the north temperate zone, a number of South American species are represented in various museum collections around the world. The genus-group taxa present in these collections indicate a past dispersal of the family into South America from the north (NORTON 1979a), but to date only one species from the former region has been described: Metabelba flagellata Balogh and Mahunka. Three new species are described below from material collected during the Hungarian soil zoological expeditions to South America (see BALOGH and MAHUNKA 1969a). I thank Drs. S. MAHUNKA and J. BALOGH for the loan of this material and the holotype of M. flagellata. For each species, the holotype and most paratype specimens will be deposited in the Hungarian National Museum (Budapest). One paratype of each will be placed in the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago) and the Canadian National Collection (Ottawa). - Immatures are not known for any of these species. Morphological terminology, with few modifications, is that of F. GRANDJEAN (see TRAVÉ and VACHON 1975) for references. Ventral length is measured from the tip of the rostrum to the posterior margin of the ventral plate. The specimen referred to below were collected from the following localities: 17 = Chile, Cerro El Roble, Cordillera de la Costa (Provincia Santiago), 84 km NW from Santiago de Chile, 29. LX. 19 65. - Berlese-samples from Notofagus forest: wet moss from bank of forest brook (1900 m). (Nr. 17/3).* 19 = Chile, Cerro El Roble, Cordillera de la Costa (Provincia Santiago), 84 km NW from Santiago de Chile, 29. LX. 1965. - Berlese-samples from shrubbery and from barren places: dry grass (1700 m). (No. 18/3) 20 = Chile, Cerro El Roble, CordiUera de la Costa (Provincia Santiago). 84 km NW from Santiago de Chile, 29. IX. 1965. - Berlese-samples from shrubbery and from barren places: bush-litter wet by thawing snow (1900 m). (No. 18/2) See: Andrássy, I., J. Balogh, I. Loksa, S. Mahunka and A. Zicsi (1965).
