The large game reserve north of the village is a recuperation area for the diminishing big game in the country. The reserve is roughly in the centre of the almost uninhabited Gonja area covered by guinea type woody savanna. Most of the land is uniformly covered with grovelike woods of medium tall trees of 15-20 ft (5-7 m) height, with dense but short undergrowth. In the rainy season, the landscape much resembles the south-eastern European oak grove (Quercus pubescens), but in the dry season it is burned and bare. Collections have been made in buffalo dung, netting on the undergrowth, by faeces traps, and on light at the motel overlooking the reserve. 14. Ejura: Ashanti region N. 7.24, W. 1.21, Alt.: 760 ft (231 m) . Transitional belt. North of Kumasi and of the forest zone, with distinct intermediate climatologie characteristics. The vegetation in the depressions and river valleys is still high forest, but a type of woody savanna occupies the more elevated dry areas. 15. Elmina: Central region N. 5.02, W. 1.21, Alt.: 0-180 ft (0-55 m) . Coastal savanna, strand and mangrove zones. 8 miles (12 km) west of Cape Coast, with a similar vegetation. A few collections have been made on flowering shrubs near the motel of the Kumasi University. 16. Garu: Upper region N. 10.51, W. 0.12, Alt.: 781 ft (238 m) . Northern savanna zone. Unlike the western part of the northern savanna zone, the vegetation here is that of an open grassland, belonging to the sudan savanna type. There are scattered groups of small shrubs, with taller trees only here and there (netting and bearing). A considerable part of this densely inhabited area is under agricultural use.
