the altitude of the first cataract (S 4°20'00" - E 15°10'06"); laguna shores covered with low trees and shrubs on wet sandy soil or dry sandy shores, then away from the river, sparse and tussocky, and further up with high and dense savanna vegetation. - A woody reservation near the village Bamboma, about 30 km to the west of the capital (S 4°10 , 34»* E 15°00'45") a young forest, rather di8turbed, and alternating with stunted shrub-plots. The climate of the savanna and culture-sztyep covering the southern parts of the country is considerably different from that of the northern, that is, northeastern forest zone. The differences are presumably the results of the vegetational changes due to human interference. Detailed meteorological data are available from the Meteorological Institute of Brazzaville (Maya-Maya ), and the IRHO Institute of Sibiti. It can be established that the first area is slightly poorer in precipitation, but its temperature data and period of insolation higher (see Meteorological Chart). On the other hand, the climate of Sibiti lying on the border of the forest zone is colder and wetter, its insolational period shorter, owing to the dense mist in the morning and forenoon hours. Graded as to decrease in temperature and increase in precipitation, our collecting areas could be ordered in our opinion in the following sequence: Loudima - Brazzaville Méya - Lefinie Reservation - Sibiti - Mt.Fouari Reservation. On the basis of the 5 year-mean of the Brazzaville data, the following general statement can be made on the climate of the area. The rains of the annual cycle begin in November, and the greatest amount of precipitation of the rainy season falls in this month. However, the maximum might also be shifted to the first part of December. With January, the short dry season sets in, with a rather low precipitation maximum of 100-200 mm in January or February. The second rainy season falls into March- April, its precipitation being sometimes lower sometimes higher than in the preceding rainy season.
