FOLIA ARCIIAEOLOGICA XXXVII. 1986. BUDAPEST CHRONOLOGICAL REVISION OF THE PILISSZÁNTÓ - ROCK-SHELTER II Viola T. DOBOSI- István VÖRÖS To date, the only excavation carried out in the Pilisszántó Rock-Shelter II was conducted by László Vértes in 1946. The rather poor archaeological and relatively rich palaeontological materials found at this site were studied and published by him a short paper in 1951.

2 — one of the classical localities of the Hungarian palaeolithic and later the eponymus site of an Final Würm fauna wave as well — which caused the excavator to search for palaeontological parallels between the two rock-shelters. It was for this reason that L. Vértes regarded the Palaeolithic finds of the Pilisszántó Rock-Shelter II as Magdalenian. Later, L. Vértes himself changed the classification to Szeletian

3 and modified the location of implements within the rock-shelter

4. In his later publications L. Vértes several times changed the border between the lower and upper groups of layers (Fig. 2., Table 3.)

5. V. Gábori — Csánk considered the two implements found in the Pilisszántó Rock-Shelter II as belonging to the Middle Palaeolithic Jankovichian culture. Her arguments are as follows: the exact stratigraphical position of the finds is unknown and according to the excavator the fauna was unsuitable for making a more accurate chronological division." Recently the opportunity arose to study the notes and sketches made by L. Vértes during the excavations. These, together with the list of animal remains in the Inventory book have helped in the attempted reconstruction of the stratigraphical sequence in the rock-shelter and the stratigraphical position of the implements and faunal remains.
