Omnis creatura significans — kitüntetett tisztelet illette meg. A kegyképek koronázásáról The Key to the Redemption of Mankind: About a Rare Baroque Iconographical Type of the Saint Anna Trinity The prayer book “The Cupboard [Storehouse] of the Divine Omnipotence: The Veneration of Saint Anne [...]” written by Jesuit Ferenc Szabolt was published with the support of palatine Pál Esterházy in Vienna and Nagyszombat (Trnava, Slovakia) in 1708. The author prepared his work for the members of the first Hungarian Saint Anne Congregation founded in 1701 at Klukno (Kluknava, Slovakia) in the Szepes region. Father Szabolt collected literary memorials of the flourishing cult of the saint from the previous centuries and tried to establish a new tradition in the spirit of the Catholic revival. 14 engravings by an unknown master illustrate the prayer book. The text and the images are in close connection. These pious engravings played an important role in the distribution of the visual culture. Saint Anne has a key position in the Christological idea of Incarnation, Passion and Eucharistia. She is the Mother of Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ; she is a fundamental figure in the human genealogy of Jesus. We can see a rare Baroque symbolic expression of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary on the first image. The St Anna Trinity is represented with two of the figures sitting in front of a Cupboard (of the Divine Omnipotence), in its drawers there are consolation and protection for the people in need. The child Jesus gives a key to open it to his grandmother, so that she can dispense these pious presents to her venerators. The most beautiful present is the Immaculate Virgin, God’s mother, from this cupboard, from Saint Anna’s womb; that is, she is the Key to the Redemption of Mankind. This composition influenced contemporary visual art as we can see on the picture from Saint Roch’s Chapel, and the painting of the altar panel from the former Franciscan Church in Kassa (Kosice, Slovakia). 204
