The chronicle of Eger Tobacco Factory
The cigar factory
In November 1896 Román Boltizár reported to headquarters that 60 apprentices were being trained within the grounds of the plant, that the raw material warehouse was under cover, and the roof structure of the production plant, too, was under construction. Pavements, roads, hot-air heating and ventilation units were installed, as well as the water mains, factory railway tracks, and internal telephones. The construction work of the second phase ended on 23 September 1897. For some time the spectacular water tower served as the look-out tower of urban birds. The output of the factory well was small, so water had to be brought in from the Archbishop’s residence by donkeys. Also, the water was calcareous — a hazard to workers and tobacco leaves alike. In order to remedy the situation the Tobacco Excise Office sent a committee to Eger to settle the matter. Following their investigation they concluded that the best water in the region was to be found in the village of Felső- tárkány. TT T IBM l ulu I ii T1
